Materials
Our work begins with material and the way it filters light.
Alabaster has been carved into vessels and lamps since ancient Egypt. When lit, the stone comes alive. Creamy tones and fine veining emerge as light moves through its surface, revealing unique depth and texture. At Material Lights, alabaster is carved using traditional techniques and reimagined within contemporary forms. more
For millennia, ostrich eggshell has been used to form vessels across Africa and the Mediterranean. Light, subtly dimpled, and almost porcelain-like, it has a quiet, tactile quality. At Material Lights, it has become our signature lampshade, glowing gently when lit and diffusing light into a warm, moon-like presence. more
