Lighting installation for Azza Fahmy Jewellery

Material Lights created a sculptural lighting display for the launch of Azza Fahmy’s Scarab collection November 2025. The installation centres on our signature ostrich eggshell lampshades. A bespoke design was developed specifically for this project and presented as part of the collection’s spatial narrative. When lit, the eggshells emit a warm, dusk-like glow. This quality connects naturally to the scarab motif, which symbolises the rising sun and rebirth in Ancient Egypt.

The installation was created for Azza Fahmy’s Jewlery shop in Arkan Plaza and within the Grand Egyptian Museum, a setting where ancient heritage and contemporary design coexist, aligning closely with the project's focus on craft and symbolism.

From ostrich eggshell to finished light, each piece followed a careful, hands-on process. We cleaned and prepared every shell before working with artist Mona El Kateb, who developed concept drawings inspired by motifs from Azza Fahmy’s Scarab collection. These were translated into continuous patterns that wrap around each shell, with every line engraved by hand before the egg was lit from within.

The narrative was extended through the surrounding landscape. Together with Flower Bar Egypt, we developed a material palette that grew out of the lamps themselves. Engraved egg lamps were placed on clay bases, surrounded by papyrus-clad pedestals and dried grasses, forming a composition rooted in heritage and material honesty.

The installation has been presented at Azza Fahmy’s locations at Arkan Plaza and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
