About

Material Lights is a design studio creating lighting objects shaped by material and light. Working between Sweden and Egypt, we use expressive natural materials such as alabaster and eggshell, allowing their texture, translucency, and variation to guide each piece.

Our objects are crafted locally across both contexts in collaboration with skilled artisans, and produced in small series. We also develop bespoke works for custom design projects. Our practice balances traditional craft with contemporary form, guided by a hands-on process rooted in material knowledge, precision, and restraint.

Profile

Material Lights is a collaborative studio founded by Nada El-Kateb and Toma Sova.

Nada El-Kateb is an architect whose work bridges spatial design and making. Her current work centres on exploring light as an artistic medium, using the unique textures and forms of each material as her guide.

Toma Sova is a lighting designer working across architectural and bespoke scales. His practice is grounded in an understanding of how light shapes space and perception, combining technical clarity with a craft-driven sensibility.
